While President Trump has indicated he believes the recent reduction in crime in America, including murders hitting a hundred and twenty-five year low (if not longer), is due to his immigration policies and federal presence in major cities, whatever the cause it seems that crime in America is experiencing decline.

Recent reports have revealed that murders fell 21% last year in 35 large U.S. cities, the largest one year drop ever, or at least since we’ve been recording these numbers, likely the lowest rate since 1900.  According to the report by AXIOS, eleven of thirteen tracked crimes declined since 2024.  The report points out that, though not as drastic of a reduction, crime was already in a downward trend during Biden’s final year in office, so the authors of the report question whether or not President Trump’s policies had a direct impact on last year’s decline.

Thirty-one of thirty-five cities experienced declines in 2025, with Washington D.C. being among the cities with the greatest decline at 40%, and Denver at 41%.  With President Trump’s “anti-crime policies” in place, and Washington D.C. being one of the primary recipients of those policies, simple reasoning suggests that President Trump’s policies did indeed have an impact.

Washington D.C. in particular has seen a dramatic decrease in crime from last year across the board.  In 2026, the capital has seen only three homicides, compared to eleven at this time last year.  So far this year Washington D.C. has also seen 73 robberies compared to 167 in the same time frame last year.  Total violent crime has decreased by 37%.

Aside from the presence of federal personnel on the streets, the Trump administration has also increased the prosecution of violent criminals.  During Biden’s presidency, U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves did not file a vast majority of charges presented to him by law enforcement – a 67% declination rate.  His replacement, Jeanine Pirro during the Trump administration, has brought charges against every single criminal with viable cases.

Since the crime crackdown in D.C., which began last August, law enforcement has taken 1,000 guns (a large majority illegally brought into the district) off the streets and arrested almost 9,600 people, according to Pirro.  She explained that they successfully “disrupt gun trafficking.”  Pirro states that now the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. has placed a needed emphasis on gun crimes.

While some of Trump’s opponents have suggested that colder temperatures this year is the cause of the decline in crime, Pirro responded that there’s a lot more to the Trump administration’s success in lowering homicides than the frigid temperatures.  D.C. has experienced “cold and snowing” before, she said.  “I think the message is resonating that the only mercy we have is for the victim.”
