Confrontation between the State of South Carolina and the federal government regarding Tariff Acts of 1828 and 1832. South Carolina maintained that the State had the right to make null and void any federal law, but James Madison defended the federal government, stating that nullification was only for the purpose of unconstitutional laws, not “any” law a State disagreed with.
