Born: February 5, 1723; Gifford, Scotland. Death: November 15, 1794; Princeton, New Jersey. Education: University of Edinburgh. As a Presbyterian minister, Witherspoon was influential in the development of America’s national character. Delegate from New Jersey in the Second Continental Congress. Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Only active member of the clergy, and college president, to sign the document. He later signed the Articles of Confederation, and supported the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
