Homelessness is a constant reminder that even in a prosperous society there are those who fall through the cracks. In many cases the persons suffer from mental illness. In other situations it may simply be the reality of hard luck or unfortunate circumstances. Nonetheless, the question has always been, “How do we help the homeless without enabling them when it comes to the behavior that led them to the place they find themselves?” While we wish to help these people regain their dignity, we don’t wish to add to the problem, nor do we want government programs to change their condition from an opportunity to rise up to instead enslaving them with entitlements.
Tony Nguyen, a pillar in the Vietnamese community, and a good friend of mine, believes that through the organization, Global Community Foundations, he may have a solution.
I am here in Garden Grove for an eight hour event designed to unveil the plan. I have already purused the paperwork regarding the program, and it is quite an ambitious project.
That said, I always believe solutions work best when they emerge from the private sector. It is amazing what we can do when we work together, and we do it without the corruption and power-broking that comes with government intrusion.
