After the War Between the States the federal government used military occupation to force the South to comply with its requirements. The South was devastated by the war, former slaves were taught to become dependent upon government benefits, and carpetbaggers took advantage of the situation and dominated politics in the South. Out of the melee rose mighty industries and innovations, which eventually strengthened the country as a whole, and connected her through new states and railroad lines from sea to shining sea. America approached the dawn of the twentieth century with growth, determination, and grit. Meanwhile, alliances and world powers were forming in Europe, as well. The stench of war was in the air.
