My grandfather served in World War II in the Army/Air-Corps. Dad served in Vietnam as a United States Marine. My uncle served in Korea and Vietnam as an officer in the Navy. I served in the United States Navy, with one trip to the Persian Gulf. My son-in-law has been to both Afghanistan and Iraq a number of times as a career service-member in the United States Air Force with retirement on the near horizon. Service in the military runs deep in my family.
On the night of Wednesday, October 21, 2026, a man walked up to the nine-foot limestone replica of the Marine Corps War Memorial standing near the entrance to Marine Corps Base Quantico in Triangle, Virginia (right by the National Museum of the Marine Corps) and started swinging a sledgehammer.
Prince William County police arrived at 10:13 p.m. and found the suspect “actively damaging the statue with a sledgehammer.” He was arrested on the spot.
The sculpture, like the famous 100-ton bronze memorial in Arlington, is a Felix de Weldon work depicting the six Marines raising the flag atop Mount Suribachi during the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima. De Weldon modeled it on Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer-winning photograph.
The damage was enough to make someone like myself feel the wounds deeply. One Marine figure, the one on the far right, was completely decapitated. A second Marine suffered deep gouges across his helmet and face. A third took damage to the bayonet slung across his back. Police estimated repairs at “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
The suspect has been identified as Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, of Stafford, Virginia… and… an illegal alien.
He was charged with felony destruction of property, felony injury to a monument, and trespass with intent to damage property. He is being held without bond. No motive has been publicly announced – but considering the fact that he is an illegal alien, the motive is likely hatred of the country he broke into.
According to federal sources cited by Fox News and confirmed in a DHS press release, Maldonado Soriano is a Mexican illegal alien who crossed into the U.S. in December 1999. He was granted DACA by the Obama administration in 2014, had it renewed under Biden in 2024, and then lost his status in August 2026 when it wasn’t renewed under the Trump administration.
His record also included a prior trespassing arrest in Stafford County in 2022.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin didn’t mince words:
“This hateful illegal alien attacked a memorial to our brave Marines, decapitating one of the statues with a sledgehammer… Criminals like this who clearly hate America have no business being in our country. We must never allow the history of our great nation to be torn down by illegal aliens who have zero respect for our country and our values. This criminal will soon face justice.”
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said:
“This criminal illegal alien’s dream is over… President Trump has secured our border and is deporting illegal criminals who hate our country and our values. The socialist Democrats want to go back to open borders and flood our communities with dangerous criminal illegal aliens.”
PJ Media tied the attack to Virginia’s broader sanctuary-state politics under Gov. Abigail Spanberger, noting the state had ignored 1,600+ ICE detainers, and jabbed: “if Virginia wokies release Soriano, there will be a not-so-welcoming base-full of Marines ready to meet him.”
Ryan Fournier of Turning Point summed up the grassroots mood on X: “OUTRAGE… The left attacks our history while we honor our heroes. Throw the book at him!”
The hard facts are simple: a man with a sledgehammer decapitated a Marine statue, did six figures of damage, and got caught mid-swing. The political fact is that the suspect’s immigration status, specifically an Obama-era DACA grant that lapsed under Trump, handed those who understand truth a clean narrative: a protected illegal alien who allegedly hates America literally took the head off a Marine.
The DACA lapse is a reality. The hatred of America is a running theme among those who have entered the country illegally. Please claim to have no motive, but the motive is clear as the scorn on the faces of Democrats. The optics of a beheaded Iwo Jima Marine during the current immigration fight spells out everything we need to know, and everything regarding what we need to do – which starts with winning on election day.
